Created after a subscription from the residents raised $900 in late 1883, James Stevens served as editor of the Townsend Tranchant, the first newspaper in Townsend. This newspaper lasted from 1883 to January 23, 1890. By January 1886, Van Fisk joined Stevens in running the Tranchant, and in January 1887, Fisk bought out Stevens and became the sole proprietor until the paper was suspended three years later. The last issue includes a notice from Alice Fisk stating that they are suspending the newspaper due to Van Fisk’s “severe and protracted illness”.
