MONTANA NEWSPAPERS is a freely accessible web resource by the Montana Historical Society, developed in keeping with the Society's mission to provide access to Montana's historical resources. Funding for this project is provided by the Montana Historical Society and by libraries, foundations, and other supporters.

The Montana Historical Society does not chose the titles for this site. Instead the growth of MONTANA NEWSPAPERS is driven by Montana communities, who want to see their history become more accessible.

Our goal is to maintain MONTANA NEWSPAPERS as a statewide web portal for digitized Montana newspapers, supporting effective searching, viewing, and use. The site uses CHRONAM, an open-source search and discovery engine developed by the Library of Congress—the same software that powers the Chronicling America web site.

Some newspapers on this site were previously found in the Montana Memory Project, a joint project between the Montana Historical Society and the Montana State Library. The Montana Memory Project continues to offer thousands of digitized photographs, manuscripts, and books related to Montana's heritage.
